Not all heroes wear capes. Some, like Harley, wear only a smile!
This heroic Goldendoodle from Virginia gained global attention for his timely intervention when it mattered most.
Harley’s owner, Ralph Dorn, spotted the six-year-old dog about 200 feet from shore, paddling with an unknown animal for a remarkably selfless reason.
As Ralph approached, he realized Harley wasn’t just swimming for fun – he was in the midst of a rescue mission!
Harley Immediately Rushed Into Action
Ralph Dorn of Virginia always knew his Goldendoodle, Harley, was exceptional. Harley had a reputation for being incredibly intuitive and intelligent.
Yet, Harley amazed Ralph once more when he leaped into action to save a baby fawn from drowning.
“Harley must’ve seen the fawn struggling in the water and instinctively jumped in,” Ralph said.
Upon spotting the fawn desperately trying to escape the water, Harley didn’t hesitate. He immediately began swimming towards the distressed animal, which was about 200 feet from the shore.
Paddling With His Friend Until They Were Safe
Rescuing the days-old fawn was no easy task. Harley had to shepherd it to shore as the fawn, uncoordinated and lost, didn’t know the way. But Harley, swimming like a pro, guided his new friend safely to the shoreline.
“Every time the fawn tried to veer off, Harley nudged it back towards the shore,” Ralph recounted.
Without Harley’s intervention, the fawn likely wouldn’t have survived. But this Golden hero successfully brought the fawn to shore. Once out of the water, he tenderly licked and cared for it.
Harley’s only concern was the fawn’s safety, and he didn’t want to leave its side.
Soon after the rescue, the fawn’s mother appeared on the lawn. Seeing her, Ralph and Harley retreated indoors, allowing the baby and its mother to reunite peacefully.
A Beautiful Friendship Was Made
Ralph thought the story ended there, but the next morning brought another surprise. While drinking coffee with his wife, Patricia, Harley began running from window to window, eager to go outside.
Opening the door, Ralph witnessed a heartwarming scene.
Harley had heard the same fawn bleating nearby – the one he had saved the day before! He rushed out to greet it, and the fawn immediately stopped crying.
The two shared a few tender moments, sniffing and wagging their tails before Harley returned home, content to have seen his little friend again.
Harley’s instinct and extraordinary ability to help others aren’t surprising. Before this heroic act, he worked as a certified therapy dog, assisting the elderly and children in his community.
Harley has always been ready to help others in need. He truly is the perfect Goldendoodle!
