At times, humans overlook the fact that dogs also have emotions. They experience joy after a fun day but can also feel heartbreak when mistreated by their supposed best friends. Many take their feelings for granted, assuming that animals don’t need kindness and respect. Unfortunately, dogs subjected to mistreatment often lose trust in all humans, making it hard for rescuers to rebuild that trust.
Frightful Pup
Kelly spent a year and a half searching for a foster dog and unexpectedly found Walt, a perfect match. However, Walt’s past experiences with unkind humans left him shy and fearful.
“When we picked him up, he was so afraid, avoiding eye contact. Someone failed him along the way,” Kelly shared.
Walt struggled to adjust, refusing to enter the house and spending most of his time motionless or staring at walls, avoiding interaction.
“He was cowering away from me because he was afraid I was going to hurt him,” Kelly said.
Kelly tried comforting Walt and providing a safe space, but Walt remained wary and slept on the floor, not recognizing the bed as his own.
Time Heals
After time in a loving environment, Walt began feeling at home. “What made me know that he knew he was safe here – I would be sitting on the sofa watching TV, and he would come in and put his head under my hand, as if to say, ‘Love me’,” Kelly noticed.
Walt started playing and invented games, displaying happiness and seeking affection. He warmed up to Kelly’s other dog, finding balance in their relationship.
Kelly felt immense joy seeing Walt’s transformation and realized the rewarding nature of rescuing and caring for dogs.
Final Word
Now, Walt enjoys the life he deserves, transitioning from fear to happiness. Kelly’s dedication and belief in Walt’s potential made this transformation possible.
